Stripping with Dawn

Nothing worse than opening the wash or the dryer after spending time getting your diapers done and discovering you have the stinkies (duh duh duuuuuuuh). Here's a great way to get rid of them with Dawn, the liquid dish detergent.

You'll need the Original blue Dawn, don't ask why but it's the only one that works. Trust me, I tried some random store brand once and it wasn't the same! Here's how I normally do it.

Load about 10-12 diapers and/or inserts into the washer, if they are already clean continue on. If they're dirty, then give them a good cold wash.

Squirt in 2-3 short squirts of Dawn. Enough to get some in there, but not enough that you'll be rinsing out suds til your baby is in college.

Now the fun part. Rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse and then rinse again. Seriously though, I do 4-6 warm/hot rinses and then another 2-3 cold. You can check the washer randomly to see if you have suds, if so rinse again. I always do a few cold rinses at the end since cold water "kills" suds. You can't rinse enough here, and my rule of thumb is rinse til you think it's a ridiculous amount and then add a few!

Open washer and see if they smell better, if not try a few more rinse or start the process over. If clean, toss in the dryer.

Lots of issues can cause stinkies, the main culprits tend to be microfiber inserts, detergent residue and super soaker kids.

Wear and Tear: Cotton Wovens!

Lots of you expressed interest in seeing how diapers and particular fabrics wear.   I'm pulling diapers from my own stash to show just how they look after a certain amount of time.   My diapers are heavily used, I'm not one to be particular about my washing, and my kids are known to go outside and play in a diaper and tee shirt.   In other words, my diapers in my own stash see everything.

This week we are looking at Cotton Wovens, one of the most common fabrics used by WAHMs. Cotton wovens wear fairly well and depending on each individual fabric tend fade a little faster.

**Had to use my phone camera for the now pics, so the diapers aren't quite as faded as they appear, I didn't want to start "doctoring" the now photos though**

This diaper had been used for close to a year.   I took the pic of the diaper sitting on the original fabric

Next are some Mediums, these were used for quite awhile since Sloane is so small. First is the original and then the now

I'm new to cloth!

These are by far my favorite emails to get. I love that more and more parents are looking into cloth and learning that it IS do able. I love the questions, the confusion always makes me chuckle because it takes me back to the hours of online searching, trying to figure out what in the heck all the terms ment. AIO, pocket, stay dry liner, no bleach, line dry this brand, no hot water for that brand. Forget trying to figure out washing at that moment!

I like sitting down and explaining the types and linking customers to pictures, I like saying what's in my stash and what I didn't like. Our stash has been a combination of every type known to man and then some. I never, ever mastered prefolds (hand my head in shame at not getting the easiest and cheapest form of diapering). I LOVE Ai2s, something I wasn't sure about in the beginning. I always recommend starting with just a few of each kind to see what you will truly like. I think ai2s and pockets are no fails, just depends what you like a little more.

No fans, potential or long time customer is ever "bothering" me with questions either. It may take me a few extra minutes to answer your email since it takes time to get you all the info, but I never mind sharing my knowledge. I always say "we all started somewhere".

A customer just notified me that her diapers were stolen out of her mailbox. It's common for people to steal packages thinking they're getting something good. I would love to be able to find these for her. Here's the info on the diapers.

Disappointed

I know, I know the blog is about all things Cow Patties but I have seen this link floating around and really looked into it this afternoon and I couldn't be more disappointed on so many levels.

Huggies, WalMart and Operation Homefront teamed up in the "Huggies Little Movers Camo for military families in need" (need to take a pause after spitting that out). Basically for every PACK of the Huggies camo diaper bought, Huggies will donate 1 diaper, yes 1 lousy non reusable diaper to a military family in need. That means a consumer has to buy 20 PACKS for a military family to get a full pack of diapers. Then they are also running something that when you use the Huggies campaign website and 25,000 postcards are sent out to our military, Huggies will up the double the donation up to 500,000 diapers.

This campaign makes me so mad on a few levels. A. It's that many more diapers in landfills, and when doing the math it doesn't really help military families out. Yes it's a diaper, but what's one diaper when you have to change a child on average 6 times a day whether you use cloth or sposies. B. It's under the "guise" of helping the military, there are so many more great organizations that put 1000% into supporting our troops and their families with ALL the money going right into the charity or cause. C. It makes me so mad to see that the solution isn't something long term for these hard on their luck families, but something that's disposable. Once it's gone there wasn't really any help.

I'm sure that someone will say I'm out of line and maybe I am but I'll continue to preach about cloth, offer options that are afforable and donate to Soldier's Angels and Wounded Warrior for example. Ai2- Fit and style

Up first is the Cow Patties AI2.

This diaper features an outer fabric, hidden PUL and an inner fabric. Pictured diaper is minky, PUL and flannel.

Front snaps for the closure and 2 rise settings for adjustability

The bamboo fleece insert folds up for 6-8 layers of absorbency. You can simply change out inserts when wet and if the shell is still clean

Sloane is 2 years old, 31" tall, 22lbs. Her waist is 14 1/2", rise is 9" and thigh is 9". She's tiny! Below is how the diaper fits front and back standing. When diaper is initial put on along with rise/waist settings and finally at the thigh

Maxl is almost 3 years old, 35" tall and 33lbs. His waist is 17", rise is 12" and thigh is 12". Below is how the diaper fits on him front and back while standing, diaper initially put on with rise/snap adjustments and at the thigh

We all know how tough the economy has been, it has affected all of us in one way or another and some more than others. For some saving money here and there is essential in keeping the upkeep of their home’s finances and for some it means something drastic like the difference between being able to change their babies diaper or making them last as long as possible on.

The Big diaper companies know this, which is why they created programs to donate diapers to people in need. My friend Christy and I always wondered what good would that do in the long run? Would they provide diapers constantly? Obviously this is just temporary fix.

We decided to embark on a project called “Spreading the Fluffy Love ” Our Vision is to create a network where we can spread the word about giveaways as there a plenty of them going online everyday from generous people all over. To get special discounts, and most important to get donation from people who are done cloth diapering and have usable cloth diapers and businesses specializing in cloth diapers of new or seconds quality diapers to go to people in need we recently were able to help our first 3 families, It was not easy picking them as we wish we had more to give to everyone but we feel great in knowing these families are in economic distress and cloth would help them a great deal.

A great Majority of people initially choose cloth because of the savings but quickly learn how much they are impacting he environment saving an average of 10,000 diapers per child’s diapering years from going into the landfill! This has a ripple effect, it makes you more conscious on other ways to be green, recycling more, using earth friendly cleaners etc.

Others choose cloth diapers because they realized all the chemicals that go into your average disposable diaper. This was one of my personal reasons for the switch along with the savings, A well known diaper company switched the formula of their diapers last year causing many rashes and burns on babies but despite the mothering community outcry, the new diapers stayed put so I decided to forgo disposables all together. A Tale of Two Diapers - A Quiet Place by Peggy O 'Mara does a great job of explaining the issue and the impact the switch to disposables has on the planet.

Spreading the fluffy love is about helping all of that! Whether you want a deal, a freebie or are in need of some help to get you started. We feel good in knowing we can support people’s pockets, the environment, baby bum health, and even promote small businesses mostly work at home moms.. all with one little magical thing.. The cloth diaper!

I live by a simple principle, one that I was taught as a small child, and that I heard about everywhere. One that I thought, everyone understood and followed. The older I got the more I realized that not everyone followed this guideline, and I was pretty surprised, because this guideline is beyond easy. To me it is a basic part of being human. I hear ya, enough already what is this "grand principle", move along women, and get to your point.

When I was little I learned this thing called the Golden Rule. I heard about it in church (two different churches that I frequented), at school, 4-H, my mom, grandmother and everyone else who was someone in my life. They didn't always say, "Hey, dipfart remember the Golden Rule", in fact more often it was a simple, "is that how you want to be treated?”

The concept is amazingly simple, and encompasses a wide range of concepts. Everything from thinking before you speak, kindness, parenting, personal relationships, all relationship in general, pet care, everything falls under the Golden Rule. If everyone, heck, even half of the population treated people the way they wished to be treated thing would have a better outlook. Part of the Golden Rule asks you to look at other side of the issue/story - to show empathy.

Not everyone, in the world is going to agree on aspects of life that is one of the joys of us all being different. If you disagree with someone, that is fine but treat those people with pleasantries. I'm not asking you to censor yourself; I'm asking people to see it from the other side, to simply ask themselves if they would want someone to talk to them that way. A fine example of myself knowing a time and place, I like, no I love the F word. I can throw out F bombs like folks throw candy at a parade. Oh, my love for the English language and its colorful descriptors, yet and that is a big YET, I know that certain people in my world, don't like the language, or find it rude/crude, so I put myself in their shoes and just don't use it around them. I don't think of it as censoring myself, I think of it as making my fellow folks happy or pleased, or more importantly comfortable.

Not every topic can be kept comfortable, but there is a difference between attack mode and education. I am all for education and information being shared, absolutely, even random and stupid information I love it all. What I don't like, is when people say, "I don't to that, only stupid and uneducated people do that". What was the point of throwing in the disses? What did that accomplish - nothing, except to alienate someone who could have learned something. The person you've just called uneducated is done listening to you, and could care less what else you have to say even if it could be beneficial. They aren't being close-minded, they are in fight mode now, and they are trying to protect themselves from the attack. Your comments, have put them on the defensive, so nothing will be accomplished other than a fight now. You'll walk away feeling cocky, because you can now say that, "of course they have issues with that decision, because they got all defensive". The other personal, you know the "stupid" one, walks away upset because they are just trying to be a good parent, and someone who doesn't know them just called them stupid. No one wins, nothing is accomplished with the fight, nothing. The same discussion can be had without the hurtful language, and everyone would leave having understood the other side better.

That's all I'm asking, is for people to think about others. Think about the tone of what you are saying, before you allow it to spill from your mouth, or keyboard. If you want to be brash, hateful or condescending then you are asking for people to treat you the same way in return. You need to treat people the way you want to be treated. Not just part of the time, but all of the time. I'm not trying to imply that I am perfect or great nor do I have this mastered, because trust me there is room for improvement. I often make snarky comments, but most often they are kept in my head. I apply this to all of my relationships, whether it is with people I know physically or online. Take a look at your marriage, would you want your significant other to do that, then why would you? Do you want your sister to treat your kid like that? Then think about how you treat her kids. Don't like how wild online discussions get? Then think about how you are saying things. Just think - that's all the Golden Rule requests.

If you judge your audience wisely, you will still be able to get your point across, and it will be a win-win for everyone.

By the way, there is a lot more I want to go into on this topic, but I think this will become a multi-part post. It is getting long winded, and I'm pretty sure you've got something else to do. ;-)

If it was your significant other who didn’t want to cloth diaper, why? my wife didn't want to cloth diaper because she wasn't completely sold on how much money we can save....that is what turned me on to cloth diapering, the money we could save.

yes the turnoff has gone away because she has seen first hand how much money we have actually saved.

the different designs, wide selection of brands, as well as all of the different types of diapers that are available

The Making of a Cloth Diaper Dad
When I was first approached with the idea of cloth diapering, a million questions ran through my mind. What’s wrong with disposables? What’s it going to cost to switch to cloth? Am I going to stab my baby (or myself) with those stupid pins? How much extra work is it going to be for us as parents? Are people going to think we’re hippies? As I began to explore the idea through actual research, what I discovered surprised me.

What’s wrong with disposables? A lot, actually*. Many throwaways contain chlorine and other chemicals that can irritate the babies’ sensitive skin. There’s some evidence to suggest that the newer “ultra dry” varieties encourage parents to change their baby less often which can increase the chance of diaper rash and infection. After use, disposable diapers end up in landfills where they decompose at a rate so slow that no one has been able to determine the actual length it takes because no one since Methuselah has lived long enough to do so.
What’s it going to cost to switch to cloth?

Like many dads, this was my biggest concern. When I learned that some cloth diapers can cost up to $30 or more each, I nearly freaked out. I immediately started doing the math (24 diapers x $30 each=way too much money for me to come up with at once!). Fortunately for my sanity, I soon discovered that you can buy a quality cloth diaper (with insert) for half that price. Design advances have made it possible to reuse the actual diaper and just change out wet inserts which can save you even more money. When you add up the amount of money you are going to spend on disposables before the baby is potty trained, cloth diapers offer a substantial savings. Am I going to stab my baby (or myself) with those stupid pins? What pins? While you can still find the old, plain pre-fold variety of cloth diapers that require pins, there are a number of other options. Many diapers now come with snaps or Velcro sewn right in. No more taking your baby’s life into your hands every time you go to pin that diaper closed! There’s even a cool little device called a “snappy” that will keep those old pre-folds securely on your child without any pointy objects! No more bloodshed!

How much extra work it is going to be for us as parents? I won’t lie to you, cloth diapering does take extra time and effort. You’ll have to prep the diapers before use, wash them a specific way, dry them another way, and treat them for stains and funky smells on occasion, but when you think about the benefits to your baby, your wallet, and the environment it is totally worth it. Not to mention the fact that you can probably get a cloth diaper with your favorite sports team’s logo.

Are people going to think we’re hippies?Only folks who are really out of the loop. In 2011, there is a growing movement of cloth diaperers in America and around the world. People are catching on to the many benefits of using cloth, and are making the change. As more people make the switch, cloth diapers become more mainstream and commonplace. At this point, most people who notice your cloth will be admiring the design or pattern rather than looking you over for peace signs or evidence of drug use.

*I have a confession to make, we’ve got a baby on the way in 3 weeks and we do have a pack of disposable diapers on hand to use at the hospital since labor and delivery nurses around here have a reputation for being notoriously anti-cloth. We’ve researched disposables that minimize the risk of irritation to our baby and lasting effects for the environment. There are now several brands of sustainably produced, biodegradable, chlorine-free diapers that you can keep on hand in your diaper bag or car for those days when you run out of clean covers, forget to pack them in the diaper bag, or just can’t practically use cloth for whatever reason.

I like that we don't have to keep buying disposable diapers every week. I believe, from what I've seen so far, that it costs less to wash and dry then to keep buying disposable. The Rumparooz we have are snap, but I like the velcro fasteners better. The ability of the diaper to "keep it all in" is highly desirable to me.

Hey fans! We're doing our first series here on the Cow Patties blog. I'm sure you're wondering what the heck is a "Daddy View"... We've come up with a survey for dad's of cloth diapered babes, for those who want to participate. We really hope you enjoy this "Daddy View" series.

2. How long have you cloth diapered?

Started in 2004 with the old fashioned cloth and pins.

3. How many kids have you cloth diapered?

One so far, but we have another due in 3 weeks.

4. What was your biggest fear/ biggest turn off as a guy to cloth diaper? If it was your significant other who didn’t want to cloth diaper, why?

My biggest fear was the cost of getting started compared to disposables.

5. Has this fear/turnoff gone away?

Yes, once I took the time to do the research I realized the significant financial savings to be had by switching to cloth.

6. Favorite thing about cloth?

Environmental benefits. I’m thrilled that cloth diapers can be made from renewable materials and never end up in a landfill. Rather than being part of the environmental problem, we’re part of the solution by using renewable fabrics.

7. Least favorite thing about cloth?

The work involved in prepping the diapers for first use, and the time it can take to get stubborn stains/odors out.

8. Favorite brand, closure (snpas, velcro, snappi/pins)

I really hate pins. Always afraid of poking the baby or myself. Velcro doesn’t feel as secure so we stick to snaps. I like Blueberry, Grovia, and BumGenius. Looking forward to trying a Cow Patty Diaper for the first time very soon. We’re particularly fond of minky diapers at our house.

9. Favorite type (pockets, AIOs, fitteds etc)

They all have their benefits. Pockets feel the most secure. Fitteds are great while the baby is little. AIOs can be very convenient to have on hand. I especially like diapers with inserts that snap securely in place and can be easily removed/replaced and the shell can be reused right away.

10. What advice would you give to a Dad who is apprehensive about using cloth?

Don’t let the fear of the unknown (expense, increased laundry time, etc…) keep you from what can be a great diapering experience that has global benefits. Cloth diapering is great for your baby, your budget, and the earth! With all of the low cost varieties available, there’s no reason not to give cloth a try!

Tell-it Tuesday: How to prep Cow Patties Cloth Diapers

We know there were many purchases made over the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale. This post will tell you what you need to do with your new Cow Patties Diapers when you receive them and to make them as functional as possible as quickly as possible.

Prep-wash all natural fibers (this includes hemp, bamboo, organic cotton, etc.) together the first few times and separately from everything else. Washing them separately from everything else ensures that the natural oils don’t cause repelling issues with the manmade fibers (fleece, microfiber, etc.). After the first few washes separately you can toss everything in together.

What I do is wash and dry (to help them shrink, all natural fibers shrink about 10%) separately the first two or three times and for the rest of the prep washes I just throw some Cow Patties bamboo inserts in whenever I do diaper laundry.

The natural fiber inserts need to be prep washed several times-the more you wash the more absorbent they become. Some people don’t initially like Bamboo because they think it’s not absorbent but in truth it can take 10-12 washes before Hemp, Bamboo, Organic cotton, etc. reach the maximum absorbency. Once they reach maximum absorbency they are much, much, much more absorbent than any manmade fiber.

If you have Cow Patties Diapers with the Bamboo inner -see picture to the left- (same with Bamboo wipes) since it doesn’t really work as an insert the covers/diapers don’t need to be prep washed all those times, just the inserts so that they reach their maximum absorbency.

Leaking seems to be a common occurrence around 3-5 washes and if you find that's the case for you don't fret, just wash them a few more times. 99.9% of the time this resolves the issue. If you continue to have leaking issues after 10-12 washes feel free to contact me or Megan and we will troubleshoot with you.

Tell It Tuesday- Thankful

For weeks now, I have been trying to figure out a way this holiday season to inspire my fans to give back just a little. We are all strapped for cash this time of year, but in our household we try to remember that someone, somewhere needs something a little more than we do.

We became an Army family this past year and in doing so have learned about several great programs that in their own ways are trying to help fellow service members and their families. There are many servicemembers who will receive little to nothing while deployed, many sitting in a hospital where a card or blanket will cheer them up or a family struggling who could use some extra food.

I (Megs) have decided to offer this to all of my fans and customers. Join one of these programs (links will be below), stay commited and you will receive a 10% off discount on all orders and FREE ahipping. Our family decided that for every time Seth is away longer than 60 days we would donate in some way. We adopted a soldier while he was at BCT, we have done Cup of Joe for a Joe, and we will be donating (ongoing) once 8 of our friends deploy. It's taught our children far more than I could ever have imagined. They see us giving back, love helping with letters and care packages. Our adopted soldier has become a part of their lives. I must read the letters from our soldier 12-15 times before they are done with it!
